Hay-on-Wye is a readers paradise! It has over 20 bookshops, many selling specialist and second hand books and is host to the annual Hay Literacy Festival, which was founded by Peter Florence and his parents in 1988. Richard Booth ('The King of Hay') opened his first book shop in 1962.

There are several canoe companies to choose from, should you wish to get your feet wet.

1) Want to canoe. Located alongside the River Wye at Racquety Farm in Hay-on-Wye. 2) Wye Valley Canoes sit on the banks of the River Wye, 4 miles west of Hay-on-Wye located next to the River Cafe in Glasbury (on the bridge). Both companies cater for a half or a full day's hire. Pack a picnic and paddle downstream enjoying the abundant wildlife en-route.

Why not try horse riding in the Black Mountains. Tregoyd riding centre offers horse riding, pony trekking and hacking within the Brecon Beacons National Park. They have direct access to the mountains from their centre and ride on the open commons and hillsides. The centre caters for all ages and abilities. Half and full days available. The riding centre is open from March to the end of October.

The Brecon Beacons National Park became an International Dark Sky Reserve in 2012. It is only the 5th destination in the world to be granted international dark sky reserve status. Visit their website for star gazing events and calendar.
